It’s been a while since I’ve written. I’ve been busy.

Busy, building.

Busy, with life, with health, with faith, failing at all three and general navigating both my own and other’s existential crisis’.

In Technology, it’s simultaneously an exciting and miserable time. I don’t think a day has gone by without a discussion on AI or other transformations — again both exciting and tiring. The pace of change has accelerated in a way that feels exponential. Moreover, more often than not we don’t get to choose which, in which order, or when they hit us so of course they all just hit us at the same time. So we’re all grappling with the same question “How Much Change is Too Much Change?”

The answer?…honestly I don’t know.

I get it. Frankly, it’s not my first rodeo.

We all have a certain tolerance, a level, and for some of us who are newer to it, it starts off pretty low. We often only discover what that level is once we’ve breached it for the first time. After that, the tolerance level, like with a newly stitched muscle is brand new and we’re going to have to discover what it is again.

As I help my teams navigate change I often recite the quote:

Quote

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” - Robin Sharma

This helps me, them, us navigate successful through changes, especially those that are unexpected by first recognizing it’s not easy, being unashamedly human. Then, accepting its inevitability, but beyond that recognizing that even if we don’t know yet what ‘the end’ may be at the point change comes we can and will find a way to make it gorgeous at the end even if that means wading through the mess along the way.

It’s also a reminder that if we want it gorgeous at the end then accepting change is the first step. Determination is the next. After that, engineer the / a happy path!

Just musing…
